Katlyn Winters

At Nielsen Law, we know legal matters—especially involving life, death, and finances—can feel intimidating. Many imagine estate planning as a cold, transactional process full of confusing legal jargon. We believe it should be the opposite: a warm, empowering journey that brings peace of mind. To share our firm’s heart, Attorney Katlyn Winters answers common questions about her motivation, philosophy, and love for planning.

A Conversation with Attorney Katlyn Winters

What made you want to be an estate planning attorney?

I love people! I love working with individuals and families and bringing them peace of mind, as well as being a strong advocate for their wants and needs! Being there for others is one of the most important things in life to me. I love that in estate planning I can work with clients and go on the journey with them.

Who are your favorite clients to work with?

My favorite clients to work with are those who love to learn and want to plan for the future. I want to be a part of my client’s lives for a long time!

What do you see as the biggest barrier to starting the estate planning process?

Fear. A lot of us, me included, are taught to fear talking about incapacity or death, and to believe that discussing money is taboo. But estate planning is so much more than death and money! Estate planning is where you get to make decisions for yourself and your loved ones. It is empowering and comforting.

How often should someone update their estate plan?

Whenever life changes! Whether it be dynamics, the people in your life, or your finances change, you need to change your plan with your life. As a general rule of thumb for myself, I check my estate plan every April 15th – not only is it tax day, but it is also my great grandparents wedding anniversary. I flip through my plan every April 15th and ask myself. “Do I still like this plan? Do I still like and trust these people? Does this accomplish my beliefs and goals?” If the answer is yes, plan goes back on the shelf till the next April 15th, or when life changes. If the answer is no, then time to make some revisions. Annual check-ins on your plan are important!

What did you wish your clients knew about estate planning before meeting with you?

I wish, before meeting with me, that clients knew it will be ok and that we will figure it out together! Families, friends, and relationships are all unique and different and my goal is to accomplish the right plan for each client. When helping a client with estate planning, my biggest goal is to be their supporter, guide, and cheerleader!
